Central European Cuisine
The Central European recipes youโll find on my blog mainly originate from Germany, Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Poland, and Slovenia (that's my country!).
What people cook in this part of Europe is very much shaped by the landscape and the countries nearby. Youโll notice that Slovenian German, Austrian, and Czech dishes often overlap, because the landscape of those countries is very similar. I'd even argue that "Alpine cuisine" is a thing, because you'll find pretty much the same dishes served through the Alpine region regardless of the country you're passing though on your way through the mountains.
Sourdough is right at home in this area too, and I love making the majority of traditional baking using a sourdough starter like my great-grandmas did!
Areas near the sea, rivers and lakes tend to use more fish and sea food.
Polish, Slovak, Hungarian, and Slovene food all fall under Central Europe too, but they each bring something different depending on their history and location. Polish and Slovak cooking is influenced by both Eastern Slavic and German-Czech traditions. Slovene food leans more toward Alpine, Balkan and Mediterranean flavors.
Hungarian cuisine is famous for the stews (goulash!), but offers amazing desserts too.
Being from Slovenia and traveling around the countries nearby gave me a chance to try the best of this cuisine and share it with you all here!
I strongly recommend incorporating some Mediterranean dishes into your summer lunch or dinner menus too (that's what I do).
